Melanoma of the hoof corium in a 20-year-old black Trakehner mare: case report.

The case report described a melanoma of the hoof corium in a 20-year-old black Trakehner mare [Germany]. The horse showed recurring hoof abscesses which occurred in monthly intervals. Treatment consisted of generous cutting of the affected hoof area and shoeing the horse with a metal plate. In spite of this treatment, the hoof abscess opened in the area of the coronary groove. Radiographs demonstrated osteolysis of the coffin bone. The histological examination of the altered hoof corium in the area of the hoof sole revealed a malignant melanoma.
