Inthe medical as well as the veterinary field, resistances and multi resistances against antiinfectives are increasingly monitored in bacterial pathogens. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most important infectious agents involved in hospital acquired infectiond of humans world wide. In addition, nosocomialmultidrug resistant bacteria are a serious problem, especially methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Currently, MRSA infections in animals are increasingly published worldwide, especially concerning horses. As these multidrug resistant staphylococci can not be treated with those bactericidic antiinfectives which are used in veterinary medicine, preventing the spread of these infectious agents is of utmost importance. This task can only be fulfilled by applicanation of a professional infection management. One option is a prudent use od antiinfectives to diminish selection pressure on the bacteria. However, most importantly a well established hygiene management will eliminate spread of MRSA in the veterinary practice as well as in veterinary clinics.
