摘要

In 1954 my uncle, Robin Chancellor, bought, for about three thousand pounds, two dilapidated 17th century classical pavilions in southern Northamptonshire. Some 30 years later, he gave them to me. The pavilions were built in 16.30, reputedly by InigoJones, and are among the earliest neo-classical buildings in England. For 266 years one of them served as a chapel, and the other as a library, for a large country house, to which they were attached by curved colonnades. But in 1886 the house was completely destroyed by fire, while the pavilions and the colonnades were spared.
