A good working definition of innovation isan idea that is making money. It doesn't even have to be a new idea; it just has to be new for the situation and worth pursuing. The mining industry continues to be innovative in many respects, with miners applying their creativity to more than technical problems. They respond to what people need on the job and in the community, and they develop new approaches to running the business. Innovation can come in any of these areas. But let's consider the technology side. One way to get new ideas to work for us is to adapt technologies and methods from other industries. An example is equipment suppliers moving away from proprietary communications to open standards that were developed in the computing industry.
