It combines wastes from the forestry and mineral sectors, while producing both environmental and economic benefits to local communities. Consider the possibility of remediating tailings impoundment areas with wastes from other industries to yield agricultural lands for energy crops and biofuel production. A pilot program on this exciting new research area is set to begin this summer on Ontario mine sites. Field trials are anticipated at several other mine sites across Canada in the coming years.
