Cow welfare and safe working conditions were a priority when planning a new dairy unit for the expanding pedigree Holstein herd at Kennetsideheads, Kelso, in the Scottish Borders. Despite farming in a predominantly arable area, Sandy Mitchell is as committed to dairying as his father, Jimmy, a former NFU Scotland milk committee chairman, and cow numbers are steadily being increased to more than 600 milkers.
