Enhancer improves aerobic stability in maize silage

As the UK maize silage area continues to grow, the instability of maize silage clamps, and the losses which occur as a result, are causing increasing concern to many dairy farmers. Maize silage instability affects most clamps to varying degrees. ADAScalculates that the dry matter losses from instability can be as much as 50% and, even with good management, as high as 25%. The latest findings by the Kingshay Farming Trust show, however, that an enzyme additive increased the aerobic stability of maize silage. In a trial comparing a well-fermented 36% DM maize silage treated with dairyFORUM's Maizyme Gold enhancer, to a control sample with no additive, the treated material had 14% higher aerobic stability.
