It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of David Shead at the end of November. During the years that I've been contributing to Dairy Farmer, I've enjoyed working with David whose sense of humour made the job more fun I'll certainly misshis letters and the occasional phone message, but when someone has been suffering you can't wish them back. As I said last month everything seems to be changing at the moment. The cows have been in day and night for the past 10 days. I was expecting themilk to drop once they came in off the stubble turnips, but that doesn't seem to have happened. We cut down the stubble turnips over the last few days and increased 1,5kg a day of their cake ration to 38% protein cake instead of it all being 21%. We didsee a response in some of the cows, especially those reaching the end of their yield peak.
