Volac system is new alternative for calves

The company which was once one of the UK's largest veal producers is getting back into calf rearing after developing a system for light beef production. Judging by the MLC's guarded enthusiasm for UK-produced veal, undoubtedly in the fear it may blowup in their faces, the Commission must clearly be pinning their hopes on other alternatives for unwanted calves. One such alternative which has attracted much attention recently has been light beef or rose veal where calves are slaughtered at roughly eight months at a weight of 320kg. Volac, the pioneers of this system in the UK, initially re-examined the feasibility of veal, but concludes that it is essentially a non-starter in the UK. So they explored the possibility of light beef.
