In the coming months, the national fertiliser manager of Cargill, Richard Sunderland (pictured below), will be looking at a variety of fertiliser matters which are important to dairy farmers. In this, the first of his regular columns, he focuses on the overaE outlook for nitrogen fertiliser in the 1995/96 season, which has just seen an upswing after years of decline. Nitrogen consumption rose sharply last season, from 2,3 million tonnes to about 2.5 million tonnes. This was due to good returns frommilk and arable crops, and a decline in set-aside. It is predicted that Brussels could, at any time now, announce a further cut in set-aside, which will increase nitrogen usage for this forthcoming season. So, the demand for nitrogen should again be higher.
