Dairy Crest is no longer a buyer of last resort but, says the company, is now a major player in the UK dairy market with several top food brands. Dairy companies have faced many challenges over the past few years - declining doorstep deliveries of milk, an ever increasing range of alternatives to butter, and strong competition from abroad to name a few Add to that the deregulation of the industry in November 1994 - the result of which was a very significant increase in raw milk prices - and it is apparent that companies like Dairy Crest have had to adapt fast. As its recent annual results have shown, Dairy Crest has adapted to the new environment well. The company's traditional role as industry processor of last resort meant that, in the light of deregulation, the scale and scope of change facing the company was more extensive than for its nrincipal competitors.
