Being 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide, it is perhaps not surprising methane is listed as one of the major greenhouse gases and that farming is often cited as the main source. Not just any farming but dairy and beef production in particular asnotoriously cattle eruct large quantities of the gas every day. However, things are not all gloom and doom as according to Harper's Prof Liam Sinclair the contribution from dairying is "considerably lower than what is generally thought and it is decreasing - two points which the industry needs to get across".
