Matching management to breed improvement

A major national programme to improve the feeding and management of high genetic merit dairy cattle throughout Great Britain and Ireland is to be launched at this year's Dairy Event. The High Genetic Merit (HGM) Dairy Cow Initiative aims to bridge thegap that has opened up between dairy breeding and practical management of high indexing, high yielding cows. HGM is a partnership between Dalgety Agriculture and the Holstein Friesian Society (HFS), working with the RABDF, leading UK dairy researchers,and commercial milk producers across the country. This initiative is designed to generate an increasing volume of up-to-date management information for UK producers over an initial three year lifespan.
