David farms 183ha in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park with the help of his son Mathew. They run a 160-strong herd of pedigree Holstein Friesians, some of which are naturally polled. Milking has been an easy job this last month. We had got downto less than four complete sides in the parlour and it was taking longer to wash through than to milk. That caused us a problem with the TBC. Under normal circumstances, we switch the water heater on when we start milking and the washing up water is warm enough by the time we have finished milking. With the short milking time, it was not long enough for the water to heat up.
