Martin and his wife Debbie moved from Derbyshire to La Vieille Cour, Loire-Atlantique, France, in 1990. They farm 50ha and run 28 French Prim Holsteins. We finally had some rain on August 10-81 days after the last recorded shower. About 12mm fell during the night followed by hot winds and temperatures of more than 40°C. The effect of the rain can only be compared to that of me peeing in the Atlantic Ocean at La Baule and expecting it to cause a very high tide in New York. It has done absolutely nothing to save the maize, which in many regions is now being called 'dick maize', referring to its height.
