Most farmers (62%) recognise the need to improve their herd's fertility and most have routine vet visits, so the question must be why is it then that the level of vet input is not delivering the improvements it should? Data was submitted from 976 UK farms, representing 8% of the national herd, and most were year-round calving. However things start to get particularly interesting when we look at calving intervals (CI). Some 18% stated their CI to be 365-90 days, and 60% from 391-420 days. Only 18% achieved a 365-390 day CI - the target figure for 69% of all participants, so around half of herds are not achieving their targets. (See Figure). Looking a bit deeper into this, 62% said their herd's fertility 'needed to be improved'.
