The high yielding Avenham herd depends to a large extent on forage but this crucially must be top quality and highly palatable. To produce around 10,000 litres of milk every day from 260 cows, James and Anne Rogerson rely heavily on achieving maximumdry matter intakes by turning fresh grass into high quality, palatable silage. An impressive average yield of more than 11,500 litres per cow is produced from a high energy ration with a forage mix comprising 60% grass and 40% maize. Producing 38 litresof milk per cow per day, it is critical the ensiled grass and maize mix makes a significant contribution to maintenance requirements.
