Jim runs 105ha, with the help of his wife Jesme and son John, in two units in central Scotland. They keep 110 Holstein Friesians, followers and beef stores. Jim is actively involved in grassland and breed societies and milk industry politics. It is mid-September, and I am penning these notes on what could be described as a perfect autumn day, Cows are grazing aftermath following second cut silage which is as near as one could wish to spring grass. Usually by this day - September 17 - gateways are sowet and muddy that we are thinking of keeping the cows in, at least by night Pleasantly, this is not so for this Dairy Event week. We are only buffer feeding 10kg silage and 2kg beet pulp plus a little cake in the parlour, making a total of 0.16kg per litre which is, without question, our lowest September concentrate cost ever. No doubt that will change, but we are enjoying it while it lasts.
