TWo-year-old silage stocks help to buffer the grass

Some silage from the 1993 season came in handy as Dai Morris tried to get the best from his cows as the grass dried up. We were extremely lucky to have some two-year-old silage available, which was all used up during August. Although it was not the best product, it helped enormously in buffering the grass. We had a few showers in late July and quickly applied some ammonium nitrate to all our grazing ground. We were lucky that there was sufficient rain to wash it in and that application has been veryworthwhile in just keeping growth going so that the cows have never been really short of grazing.
