The early part of the year is often associated with a drop in fertility, and nutritional status needs to be regularly assessed during this difficult period. Vet Jonathan Reader from the Kingfisher Practice, Crewkerne, looks at the practicalities of metabolic blood profiling to lift fertility. Reduced daylight and colder weather may not produce the optimum environment for cows to come bulling and hold to service. So it is vital during the current time of year that the nutritional status of cows is optimal to maximise milk composition, yield and reproductive performance. Metablic profiling is one of several ways of carrying this out by asking the cow how she is coping with the ration.
