Luciano farms 200ha in the Po Valley, northern Italy, where he grows maize and lucerne to feed his 320 Holsteins and 50 Jersey cows. The herds never go out to grass, but produce an average 9,000kg and 6,200kg respectively, from a TMR. In the last weeks of August the 'first to harvest' race is open: ready, like horses at the starting gates, every farmer is watching any neighbours' stir of combine machine and wagons.
