Jerseys are better urea utilisers

Shirley Macmillan reports on a study which has shown differences in the amount of blood urea in different breeds. It appears that Jerseys have a higher natural level of blood urea than Holsteins. Initial results from a BOCM PAULS study into feeding Jerseys show that they consistently have a blood urea level 2m(micro)mols/litre above a typical Holstein reading of 3.0 to 5.5mmols/litre. This indicates that they are better at utilising the breakdown products of body fat to produce a type of protein which, together with nitrogen from urea, helps to give the high milk proteins seen in Jersey milk.
