Continuing her series on small herds, Rachael Porter travelled to the West of Scotland to visit a family successfully running a 40-cow herd of Ayrshires. Jim Steel has built a himself a solid dairy business over the years, one which he says will see his family farming well into the next century, despite the fact that his herd comprises just 40 cows.
