The birth of twins in a dairy herd often gives little cause for celebration. Cows bearing twins lose a lot of condition prior to calving and never milk as well as their herdmates. Retained placenta is common and this increases the risk of endometritis (whites) by a factor of 25. Poor body condition and endometritis together are a real recipe for infertility.
