LARGE DAIRY companies are not paying the milk price that they agreed in contracts they signed last January, The national basemilk price in Italy is fixed once a year through an agreement struck between dairy companies, milk producers and union representatives. This year's price - equivalent to about 34 09p/kg - seemed quite satisfactory to producers, as it was an increase of 2.13p/kg over the past one But satisfaction was later to be frustrated when three multinational milk buyers announced that the milk price was too high, according to its real market value, and withheld 2 98p/kg from their suppliers' milk cheques.
