Interest remains in the '70s forage alternative

Arable silage, a mixed crop of cereals, legumes and vetches, had its heyday in the '70s when it was grown all over the country, but there are still producers in parts of England and Scotland growing and feeding it to their dairy cows. The crop is nowconcentrated in areas where grass leys are sown in the spring such as south-west Scotland. "It's very much part of a tradition there," says Sinclai-r McGill's brand manager, Ian Misselbrook. "There's a shorter growing season and the winters tend to be harder We sell 20-30t of arable silage seed mix in south-west England and 40-50t in Scotland."
