The final two runners up for the first David Shead Award for young agricultural writers are Rebecca Vines from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and Gary Yeomans from Monmouth, Gwent. Rebecca, whose article begins below, is 19 years old and, when she is not helping out on her father's dairy farm, is studying Journalism, Film and Broadcasting at Cardiff University. Gary is 24 years old and now works on his family's lOOha dairy and mixed farm. He graduated from Harper Adams Agricultural College in 1994 andhas worked in the USA on a Young Farmers international exchange visit. His article is on page 14. Well, we've come a long way since the Ministry of Agriculture in the sky told Adam that he had dominion over the birds and the bees, the animals and the trees. In 2000 years, we've slummed it in wattle and daub huts, ploughed our strips of land and rotated our crops. We've welcomed the pioneers, Jethro Tull, Bakewell, Townsend; needled the crown from time to time and motivated the country to 'Dig for Victory' And now, as we dash towards the glowing millennium with such recently purchased mod cons as electric milking parlours and colour television sets, everything should be looking rosy.
