Deviation, EMC, and Sectoring are all words that you will hear and should be informed of. What do they have to do with you? Well first of all some history is necessary. When CGSB decided to follow the ISO 9712 standard with regards to personnel certification (that's you and me), it was necessary to adopt the standard to the relevant issues here in Canada. Canada is a big place (understatement) with a relatively small population and put together results in a density of 3 people per square kilometre, which is very low when compared to other industrial countries. This means that a deviation from the ISO standard was the best route for our certification to follow. The deviation was to eliminate sectoring within the certification scheme (except for radiography) and call our sector EMC (Engineering, Materials and Components). To ensure a minimum level in all sectors, a need for extra examination questions and a variety of parts on the practical examinations was recognized.
