Code Case 2235 was approved by ASME B&PV Code Committee in 1996, enabling the use of ultrasonic (UT) examination in lieu of radiographic (RT) examination for ASME Section VIII Division 1 and 2 vessels (i.e. vessels intended for use in non-nuclear applications). A technical justification document produced in 1994 included a UT performance benchmark by WesDyne International using an 18-inch (457 mm) heavy section test block provided by Japan Steel Works to the Materials Properties Council (MPC) in the United States of America. A 10-inch (254 mm) test block was also provided by the Chevron oil company to the MPC for use in the demonstration tests. The MPC funded the work required to embed representative flaws into the test blocks.
