The ligand 4,4'-biquinazoline, 1, forms the complex [Ru-(bipy)_2(1)]~(2+) which consists of atropisomeric (Δλ/Λδ) and (Δδ/Λλ) pairs of enantiomers but upon crystallization, spontaneous resolution of the major Δλ/Λδ pair occurs to give Δλ and Λδ crystals; although the free ligand is covalently hydrated in aqueous solution the ruthenium complex is not.
