Oxidizing the trimer V_3(μ_3-O)(O _2)(μ_2-O_2P(Bn)_2) _6(H_2O) in the presence of excess ~tBuOOH results in V_4(μ_3-O)_4(μ_2~-O _2P(Bn)_2)_4(O_4) and heating W(CO) 6 and bis(benzyl)phosphinic acid in 1:1 EtOH/THF at 120 °C produces W_4(μ_3-O)_4(μ_2~-O _2P(Bn)_2)_4(O_4).
