Fort McMurray is a unique Canadian mining town. In fact, this town is now a city with facilities, services, roadways, and businesses all bursting at the seams; forested walking trails gracing the edges of most neighbourhoods; and every business window sporting a "Help Wanted" sign. But with limited space for additional people to live, drive, or park, line-ups are long and customer service (often) short. The opportunities to succeed still outweigh the challenges, but there is a definite sense that the pace of life is too quick and the area is out of breath. These challenges are not limited to small businesses, but affect the multi-billion dollar oil sands operations as well. Aside from the staffing, contractor availability, and equipment limitations, the pace of expansion is resulting in an increased need to review current practices and develop new solutions. In the forefront of these reviews is new technology.
