Corrosion of welded joints in atmospheric conditions

The equipment of al l10 conventional power plant complexes by desulphurising systems and the operation of both nuclear power plants have expressively contributed to the change in the chemical composition of the atmosphere and its corrosion effect in the Czech Republic. The structures welded from ATMOFIX steels are at present less exposed to extreme pollution where concentration of SO2>100 mg/m2/day. This is documented in Figs. 1 and 2 comparing SO2 concentrations in the North-Czech Basin in the years 1991 and 1999. Application of these steels in unprotected condition i.e. free from coatings or hot tin plating is limited only by the atmospheric corrosion of welded joints.
