As the 100% owner of Fort McMurray oilsands lease acquired last year, Vancouver-based Ivanhoe Energy Inc. is moving ahead with plans for an initial 20,000 bbl per day SAGD (steam assisted gravity drainage) project that will use its own field partial upgrading technology, an investor conference heard this week. "The synergy between the two technologies is what gives it our advantage," Ian Barnett, executive vice-president, corporate development and finance, told the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers investment symposium. "The net result is that it allows a producer to avoid the need for natural gas for thermal operations, avoids the need for diluent for transport of heavy oil and it captures the majority of the heavy/light differential."
