An oilpatch veteran remembered for his low-key style and hard work has died after more than five decades in the drilling industry. John Hlavka would have been 78 next month. One of the few industry veterans to work his way up from the drilling floor, Hlavka started as a roughneck after working on the family farm. He retired only 11 weeks ago as chief executive officer of AKITA Drilling Ltd., having also served as president.
