Proposed tax increases for United States oil and gas companies and increased uncertainty in access to federal lands will hurt that country's conventional energy industry but could benefit Alberta's natural gas industry, a meeting of industry and government leaders heard last week. Nuclear and coal-fired power plants face opposition and constraints, the U.S. is nowhere close to being able to rely on renewable sources for energy, and the country will soon be aware of the costs associated with climate change, said David Hill, former general counsel at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
