Realtime system enables H&S progress

Health and safety is the focus of a progressive program at Newmont, which has recently been enhanced by a new system for effective management. The Rapid Response system has been operating on a global scale for a year, and was recently augmented with a live web-based update system. "Rapid Response is a safety net -when something fails, it's employed to mitigate the escalation of damage," said Paul Dowd, vice-president, operational development, health and safety, Newmont. "It's allowed us to employ progressive risk management techniques throughout the corporation." Under Rapid Response, the company is divided into three tiers, which enables free communication. The tiers, representing the individual sites, regional divisions, or the corporation as a whole, feature nominated people with various roles and responsibilities determined for when an event occurs.
