The growing competition on the milk processing market compels Polish dairy co-operatives, thus far the unquestionable leaders of the market, to launch efforts designed to increase the competitiveness of their products. The influence of tougher competition is made even stronger by the fact that the market of dairy products is gradually becoming saturated. Dairy co-operatives need to diversify the assortment of manufactured products if they want to stay on the market and prevent the loss of clients. In order to facilitate the adjustment of Polish dairy co-operatives to the requirements of the market economy and standards binding in the European Union it is necessary to introduce changes and new rules regulating Poland's economic system. At present there are several possible ways for transforming the dairy co-operatives. The selection of any of these ways is determined by a number of factors that will have to be taken into account by co-operatives when they decide to launch efforts leading to restructuring and internal changes. It seems that the revived producers' associations and co-operative unions will have a particularly great role to play in this respect. The influence of the members of co-operatives on their development should not be neglected either. Their conviction as to the correctness of the idea of collaboration in the form of a co-operative is one of the conditions of successful transformation of the co-operative sector.
