"In the last four months of 2002 there was a break in the downward price trend in the coffee market since mid-1998, although the December average retreated somewhat from that of the previous three months. The rise is very significant, bearing in mind these unprecedented weak prices have ruined many small producers and further fueled economic difficulties of many coffee export dependent countries. The prospect of a major contraction in Brazilian production is crystallizing, with the first estimate for crop year 2003/4 showing a total of 27,7-29,7 million bags compared to 47,3 million for the previous year's crop.
