Organizational basis for implementation of poultry genetic resources conservation programmes.

The animal genetic resources conservation programme in Poland currently includes 10 breeds/lines of laying hens, 14 breeds/lines of geese and 10 breeds/lines of ducks. The poultry genetic resources conservation programme covers birds (flocks) of different lines, every generation of which is evaluated for productive value in accordance with current regulations. These animals meet the criteria for herd-book entry and have a phenotype that conforms with the line standard. The programme is carried out by breeders/owners of conserved flocks, entities that keep animal herd-books (National Research Institute of Animal Production in Balice and National Poultry Council - Chamber of Commerce in Warsaw) and the entity that evaluates hen productive value (National Poultry Council - Chamber of Commerce). Animal genetic resources conservation activities are coordinated by the National Research Institute of Animal Production.
