Geodetic monitoring of gravitational mass movements using the example of the Gradenbach Observatory

Deformation measurements of large civil engineering structures and of natural phenomena are core competences of engineering geodesy. The analysis of the complex cause-response relationship between acting forces and resulting deformations is only possible in an interdisciplinary way where experts of different scientific fields collaborate. An example of such a successful collaboration is the Gradenbach Observatory for the monitoring of the landslide Gradenbach. In the context of this case study the complexity of modern monitoring systems, the achievable accuracies and extensively the role of engineering geodesy is discussed.
