In 2013 the Fractal Shallow Bed Weak Acid Cation (FSB-WAC) softening system was installed at Suiker Unie Anklam. To evaluate the FSB system, a team from Cosun Food Technology Centre investigated the process during the start-up campaign in 2013. At the beginning results of the softening were good, but at the start up of a service run a pH value drop occurred and optimal softening started with a delay due to chemical kinetics.
