Comparative morphology of bony hooks of the anal and pelvic fin in six neotropical characid fishes (Ostariophysi: Characiformes)

The morphology of bony hooks on anal-fin and pelvic-fin rays in six neotropical characid fish (Astyanax fasciatus, A. lacustris, Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus, H. itaparicensis, Cornpsura heterura and Serrapinnus heterodon) representing different reproductive modes (inseminating and externally fertilizing) was analysed with a particular focus on the form, distribution, development and orientation of bony hooks of the male anal-fin and pelvic-fin rays.
