Osamu Shimomura (Marine Biological Laboratory, Massachusetts), Martin Chalfie (Columbia University, New York) and Roger Tsien (University of California, San Diego) have been awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein (GFP). This protein, along with the class of similar proteins, has become one of the most important tools in contemporary bioscience, and known famously to the general public for green-glowing mice and pigs.
