摘要

The Lower Saxony Geological Survey (NLfB) was founded to conduct geological research in Lower Saxony. Data from boreholes was initially evaluated and archived in analog form. To facilitate data evaluation, a database was developed for the borehole data. Today, after further development and design changes, its relational database structure makes it an important part of the Applied Geology Information System in Lower Saxony's Geo-Information System (NIBIS). Substantial difficulties were encountered during the conversion of the initial, simply structured database to a relational database structure. Solution of the problems was aided by the development of a new standardized data format. A complex program system was developed to restructure the data and build the logical relationships in a tree structure. Conversion of all of the data into this standardized format now permits an extensive syntax and plausibility control of the data. A farther, important component of the information system is the new borehole database format SEP3. SEP3 is used for the interface to exchange borehole data with other systems. The SEP3 data can be integrated into other software designed to evaluate borehole and geological data. This new format improves evaluation and graphic representation of the geological data. Moreover, the input, syntax and plausibility checks that take place during data input increase the quality of the stored data. Information from the borehole database can be obtained by the public: Inquiries about boreholes and the penetrated strata can be addressed directly to NLfB. The data can be provided in several analog or digital formats. Borehole data is already available in the Internet. Well location maps are offered free of charge. With these maps the user can determine whether data of potential interest is available in the search area before an official inquiry is made. On-going developments include the use of XML standards for a standardized exchange of data.
