In April 2010,I followed Allan Kern's automation reassessment editorial with a call to renew the practice of process control and IT in the HPI. Now I follow his thoughtful July 2010 editorial2 on continuous improvement or core competency. After 50 years, it is time to restart with a reminder of the purpose of instrumentation, control systems, IT and CIM, critique weaknesses and offer ways to strengthen their financial performance.
