In the process control industry, true savings are enabled through the integration of device diagnostic information into automation and management information systems. Electronic device description language (EDDL) technology plays a key role in device integration and life cycle management, from planning and procurement, to commissioning and maintenance, through retirement and replacement. This article describes how the Fieldbus Foundation, along with the HART Communication Foundation, Profibus Nutzerorganisa-tion e.V. and OPC Foundation, are involved in an industry-wide effort to use EDDL-based technology to provide a standard and consistent structure for data transport within modern plant automation systems.
