Many refineries use preflash drums within die preheat train networks. Often, diese systems experience problems in the heat exchanger network. In some cases, these problems can reduce unit throughput and, in the worst case scenario, require unit shutdown for cleaning (mechanical or chemical) or other mandatory maintenance. Descriptions of these problems are well published.1 In a preheat train heat exchanger network, hydraulic and heat transfer are related; so, both should be considered simultaneously.1 Otherwise, a reduction in heat transfer and an increase in network pressure drop could cause a short runlength.
