Proper functioning of flanged joints requires good design,which will ensure both joint integrity and leak tightness since consequences can be disastrous.Many international codes and standards address flanged joint design.Some design philosophies emphasize more on joint integrity by controlling the stresses;others like the relatively new EN 1591 address both the joint integrity as well as leak tightness criteria.
