Sometimes, uninformed risk-based inspection (RBI) planning of tanks may lead to poor maintenance, increased inspection intervals, or even misguided prioritization of repairs. This can take place without paying attention and knowledge to the current design or future needs for amendments. This article will describe failure analysis investigations of the undersides of two storage tanks that took place in a vital section of a petrochemical plant and their environmental implications. It also discusses the field performance assessments and remedial measures such as possible coatings applications and tank bottom replacement strategies.
